My disc drive broke in my elite so I'ma buy a replacement. I was wondering if I have to get the same model drive thats already in it, or if I can get a different drive that I more easily flash later to play backups later in the future. I kno I'd have to flash the new drive anyways, but I am not a fan of stealing games, just want to know if I can use any other drive.

STEALING is a very harsh word. ppl in this forum dont do things like that wat do u take us all for. playable backups is more apropeate. if your drive is broke why dont u ask my mate bill at microsoft to fix it just tell him i told you

What is the problem with the drive? If it is giving dirty disk errors or just saying open tray you can calibrate the pot on the drive fairly easy by reading the guide I will attach. You can probs send it back under it's warranty but if you do want to replace the drive and if you can get the same one then you can just swap the drives pcb (the little green motherboard inside) that way all the hardware is new but the actual drive thinks it is the same. If you can't get the same one you will spoof it to work. If you want to flash it then you would need to flash it as what it is and then spoof it to what the drive was in your 360.

I put discs in my drive and they come out broken, as I said about my warranty, though it is expired, the parts and labor, and its expensive to get a 360 fixed imo its not worth it.

I was wondering I have an Hitachi GDR3120L and the rom version is 0079FL. The only replacement drive I can find is the Hitachi 0078FK, If I buy this drive and swap out the board will it still work or would I have to flash it. I appreciate the help.

If you know of a site where I can find an 0079FL It'd greatly be appreciated. I looked around but didn't see one, I'm not too big into modding, so its all new territory looking for these things.

your best bet is to get a toshiba-samsung ms28 and spoof it. its real easy to spoof a drive now. just dump the stock firmware using jungleflasher. then as target select ix 1.51 sam, click "spoof source to target" and thats it for the firmware. :
save it as IMPORTANT:::: samcfw.bin

create an iprep usb drive and place the samcfw in it. then procede to flashing

Just for anyone else having there discs scratched. Before going out to buy a new drive try this mod from Llamma.

Im pretty sure if you get the same drive it will work but if not you'll have to spoof it.

If it isn't the same drive it will need to be spoofed. Them pads are a great idea for the disk drive though!
