Arrow Changing DVD Drive?

I wish to change my Xbox DVD Drive.
I currently have a Hitatchi v0078FK.

As many of you may know, they are a pain in the ***.
I'm planning to buy a Samsung MS28 TS-H943.

But I heard it isn't as easy as just chaning the drives over.
Something about a Key?.
Does anyone know of the steps on getting this key and changing it?.

Thanks for your help.

Each Xbox 360 DVD drive has what's known as a "DVD key", this key is unique and paired with the console. If you put another drive in the does not have this key, then you won't be able to play any Xbox 360 games...

However you can get this key from your Hitachi 78FK, first off you'll need to get it in to mode B. To do this you need to get Slax, burn it to a CD, then boot from it - then your drive should be in Mode B. After this you need to boot in to windows, dump your original firmware and extract your drive key. You then need to spoof the firmware on it as that of the other drive. Personally I like BenQ drive's. They're not to hard to spoof, they're reliable and aren't very noisy.

Let me know if you plan on going ahead with it all... I'd reccommend flashing you 360 while your at it!

More info on Mode B, getting the original firmware and flashing it can be found here:

when you spoof a drive all you are doing is dumping the firmware off of drive 1 and putting it onto drive 2. Correct. I was told once that you had to change out boards in the drives.(not the consoles mother board but the one inside of the dvd drive) I have a Toshiba Samsung MS28 thats going out, Id like to replae it and flash it. I read the guid thats linked above It says you haveto take a resistor out and put a switch in. I had read some where else that says you only need different software when you flash it.

spoofing a drive is easy and doesn't require any hard mods like removing "pcb's" ( the board inside of the dvd drive) or replacing switches or resistors.

The way I would go about it would be to use Jungle flasher.

Get the latest version of Jungle flasher Read there tutorial on how to dump your 78, you will need a slax disk for this model. Or for the other guy read how to dump the Toshiba Samsung MS28 and once you have dumped it successfully you have "the key" that is needed! Then you can mess about as much as you want because in theory you can always restore it. You will no doubt need to do a lot more reading before you go into this but you pretty much follow the jungle tutorial for flashing and instead of letting it auto load the firmware (which it will load for the drive you have) you chose the file yourself for the new drive you have bought.
